Let’s start with a basic fact: money, IN ITSELF, is not mammon.
Money becomes mammon when it is allowed to find A SEAT in the human heart.
This is significant because the human heart was designed to be the dwelling place of God. His throne, so to speak. This is particularly true of a redeemed soul.
God wants to reign supreme in our hearts – unrivalled and untroubled. This is the supreme goal of our redemption in Christ Jesus. When Jesus came into the world, this is the life that He both lived and modelled for us to follow (John 5:30). When a believer walks in this same way, He is indeed ABIDING IN CHRIST (1 John 2:6), with a heart that is consecrated to God.

However, Satan is also interested in this heart! And, he uses mammon as a tool to target, capture, and control the human heart. In His teaching in Matthew 6:24, Jesus made it clear that mammon is A DIRECT ‘COMPETITOR’ to God in the human heart. This is how He puts it: “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
In practical terms, what does this mean?
It means that, as The Master, God makes certain demands on us. Similarly, mammon, ALSO as a master, makes certain demands on us. In most cases, the demands from these two M/masters usually conflict.
In such cases of conflict, the demands that we follow may be a PRIME INDICATOR of the G/god that we serve! Very simple.

When we CONSISTENTLY allow the demands/
requirements of money to OVER-RIDE the demands of God, it reveals two deadly things – according to the words of Jesus quoted in the above verse.
First, it reveals that we are SERVANTS OF MAMMON, lovers of mammon!
Second, it reveals that, in CHOOSING and HOLDING ON to mammon, we actually DESPISE GOD!
Apparently, these two conclusions may sound incredulous to many of us that think we are children of God, servants of God. So, to clear the confusion, here’s Matthew 6:24 again, in full. Please read it slowly: “No man can serve two masters: for either he will HATE the one, and LOVE the other; or else he will HOLD to the one, and DESPISE the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
Very, very clear, isn’t it? With an implication that is both staggering and mind-boggling!
Fortunately for us, Jesus did not stop His teaching at verse 24. He went on, in verses 25-34, to teach us how to avoid the catastrophe of being LOVERS of mammon, and HATERS of God.

Here are some of the key points that He made in those verses:
(1) Because of a primary focus on ‘what to eat’ and ‘what to wear’, ALL unredeemed mankind is automatically under the YOKE of the god of mammon! All are servants of mammon. For, indeed, “… the whole world lies in the power of the evil one”, as the Scriptures make clear in 1 John 5:19.
(2) Redeemed mankind does not necessarily fall into this category. This is because God, as a Father, promises to provide for us what the Gentiles are seeking. “For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all … all these things WILL BE ADDED to you.” (verses 32-33). Those that struggle to accept this simple reality of God as an ABLE and RELIABLE Provider are addressed by Jesus as, “… O you of little faith.” (verse 30).
(3) Rather than seek what the Gentiles are seeking, Jesus taught His followers to SEEK THE KINGDOM OF GOD and His righteousness. Not just to seek it, but to make this our PRIORITY PURSUIT in life (verse 33). Put simply, this means prioritising matters of eternal value over matters of earthly value. Just the same point that is echoed in Colossians 3:1, “If then you have been raised with Christ, SEEK THE THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.”

If we live by this principle, Jesus (who CANNOT lie) promised us that our Father (who CANNOT fail) will provide what HE knows that we NEED for our sojourn on earth.
This is where the first problem comes in! As believers, how many of us allow God to define what we TRULY NEED for our sojourn on earth – according to His specific purpose for our lives? How many???

Rather, is it not that we allow THE WORLD and its value system to define what we NEED? Is it not that we use our flawed human wisdom/logic to define what we NEED? Is it not that we allow what our peers have achieved (or are achieving) to define what we NEED? Is it not that we allow the economy of the world to define what we NEED? Is it not that we allow our age/status to define what we NEED? The list of what/who defines our NEEDS goes on and on!
And, without our knowing, this FLAWED, carnal definition of our NEEDS becomes the DRIVING FORCE of what we do on a day-to-day basis on earth! It determines the job we do.

It determines how many hours a week we work. It determines the logicality of relocating to what/where we consider to be GREENER PASTURES. It determines how/where/when we spend our money. And so on.
In short, our NEEDS (or, rather, what WE consider to be our NEEDS) determine the direction of our lives! In this blind pursuit, we do not even know when WHAT WE WANT begins to masquerade itself as WHAT WE NEED!
When we allow CARNALITY to define our NEEDS in this way, only one god, one master, will help us to fulfil those needs – and that is the god of mammon! If we serve this god of mammon dutifully enough, he’ll give us what we want! For the God of heaven has NOT promised to provide what WE think we need. Rather, He provides what HE defines as our NEEDS according to HIS PURPOSE for our respective lives. Do you see the HUGE difference?

Generally speaking, what God considers to be our PRIMARY needs are clearly defined for us in 1 Timothy 6:8, “And having food and raiment LET US BE THEREWITH CONTENT”. This is in line with what Jesus listed as our NEEDS in the Matthew 6:24-34 passage we are looking at. Please have a look at his summary in verse 25, “… Is not the life more than MEAT, and the body than RAIMENT?” So, again, Jesus highlighted those two basic needs of man that Apostle Paul listed. Primarily, this is where God wants our CONTENTMENT to lie as we follow Christ daily.
But, how many of us believe this? How many of us accept this as A BASIC REALITY of our followership of Christ? How many see it as an imperative of THE CROSS we are called to carry DAILY – if we want to truly follow Christ in THE NARROW WAY that leads to life.

Having minimised/neglected this FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLE of our walk with Christ, believers have gone on to chart OUR OWN course in this world. To a large extent, we follow OUR dream. And we assiduously SERVE the god of mammon to keep the ball of our dream-chasing rolling.
No wonder the Bible states that the LOVE OF MONEY is the root of ALL evil (1 Tim 6:10). Particularly, I dare say, the root of our rebellion against God in charting our own course in the world! No wonder 1 Tim 6:9 EXPRESSLY FORBIDS a believer from desiring TO BE RICH! No wonder Jesus made it clear that it will be difficult for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God! (Matt 19:23) No wonder Jesus said believers that do not FORSAKE their possessions CANNOT be His disciples (Luke 14:33).

For, indeed, a believer that fails to submit to God at this ‘elementary’, foundational aspect of the Christian faith can NEVER, EVER submit to God in the larger aspects of our walk with Christ! Neither can such a believer enter the fullness of God’s purpose for his life. Jesus spoke about this spiritual principle in Luke 16:10- 11, “He that is faithful in that which is LEAST is faithful also in much … If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?”
This is what it all comes down to. Money is a master – just like God is The Master. Also, money is a god – just like God is The God of heaven. As man, our privilege is to CHOOSE whom to serve – for it is TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE to serve both M/masters, as Jesus made clear in Matthew 6:24.
Thus, any believer that ignores/minimises the will of God – just so that he can work and earn money is serving mammon.

For example, the husband that abandons his family in another town/country – just so that he can work and earn money is serving mammon. God expects him to LEAD and PROTECT his family – not something that can be EFFECTIVELY done from a distance.
The mother that minimises/abandons her God-ordained maternal responsibilities to her children – just so that she can work and earn money is serving mammon. God expects her to devote her attention PRIMARILY to building her home.
The young man/woman that is not EARNESTLY seeking God’s PURPOSE for his/her life, opting instead to simply CHOOSE a lucrative career – is preparing to serve the god of mammon. In living for Christ, God expects us to DIE to our own dreams, ambition, aspirations, etc. This is an outcome of DENYING SELF and CARRYING OUR CROSS daily to follow Christ (Luke 9:23).

As we pursue our lives, the list of believers that have allowed themselves to be transformed into SERVANTS OF MAMMON, perhaps unknowingly, is as long as it is complex! More so in this SELF-seeking, SELF-pleasing generation that has been consumed by the SPIRIT OF THE WORLD.
“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be LOVERS OF SELF, LOVERS OF MONEY….”, prophesied Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 3:1-9 (ESV). He added this in 2 Timothy 4:3-4, “For the time is coming when people will NOT endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit THEIR OWN PASSIONS, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”

We live today in the fulfilment of these dire, end-time prophecies. Days that Jesus told us will cause the love of many for Him to wax cold (Matt 24:12). Perilous days that SAP our faith in God and weaken our desire to please Him IN ALL THINGS – living, NOT for ourselves, but for His Son that died for us (2 Cor 5:15).
Shortly before He went to the cross, Jesus cast a glance on the horizon of time, and asked this startling, rhetorical question: “… Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8)
Friends, I commend this question to your conscience; while praying that our PERSONAL RESPONSE will be along these lines: “Lord, even if you’ll find nobody else, my greatest desire and prayer is that, BY YOUR GRACE, you’ll find me at my duty post – watching and waiting.

“Please help me, from TODAY, to repent and to start making the necessary adjustments that will bring my life back into alignment with YOUR WILL and YOUR PURPOSE for my life. Without you, I cannot do this. But, in total surrender, I put my frail hand in your mighty hand and ask that you kindly lead me by your Spirit as I live daily, not for myself, but for you ALONE. This I ask in faith in your most holy name. Amen and Amen”.
I pray that this will be our individual response to this exhortation, and that our repentance, if/where needed, will BRING FORTH FRUIT to the praise of our heavenly Father. Amen.
Thanks for reading, God bless you.
