PSALMOS: From A Bread Hawker To An International Gospel Artiste

Psalmos
Psalmos

“Gone are the days when it was believed that gospel artistes don’t go far; now, we are taking over… We are taking over and heaven is our limit. We have the content and the voice.”

Fondly known as Psalmos, ‘Koso’ba bi re’ (No God Like You) and ‘Olorun to tobi’ (Big God) crooner, Mobolaji Olayinka Adekunle-Oniyo is a gospel musician with a calling to magnify the Most High God as her songs reflects her personal experience with Abba Father.

Born on 31st October 1981 in Ekiti State, South West Nigeria, as the last child in a family of six, she grew up in Lagos and was raised by her (now late) mother who had separated from her father. She recently reminisced on her little beginnings:

“The Big God was with me as a child when I had severe malnutrition.
The Big God was with my mum and me when we lived in an uncompleted building.
The Big God was with me when I had fainting spells as a child for many years and they used to call me ‘daku daji’.
The Big God was with me when I used to hawk bread for my mum.
The Big God was with me till I finished my secondary school education.

He was with me throughout my two years in Ado-Ekiti where I obtained a diploma in Banking and Finance.
The Big God was with me as He helped me to secure a job in the banking sector all by Himself without me knowing nobody there.

He was with me throughout my years at Lagos State University.
The Big God was with me when I lost my lovely, supportive, sweetest Mother. It was the worst year for me. God never left me, instead He did more by taking her position in my life. I remember the Word He gave me: ‘Don’t worry daughter, A NEW DAY has come.’

The Big God was with me when my first marriage crashed. He was with me, taking me through my destined journey: He helped me, gave me a new home, blessed me with his own very son (Mr Oniyo).’
Psalmos has a Diploma in Banking and Finance from the University of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State and a BSc. Degree in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management from the Lagos State University, Lagos State.

She proceeded to work in the corporate world, building her career in the banking sector with 3 years of work experience before she decided to answer the call of the Master to leave all and follow Him through the Music Ministry. In 2012, she was nominated for the Africa Gospel Music Awards (AGMA) in United Kingdom under the category of ‘Discovery of the Year.’ In 2014, she joined the Choir at Christ Livingspring Apostolic Ministry (CLAM). She released ‘Oluwa Ku’Se’ featuring Kenni K’ore (of the ‘Olori Oko’ gospel group: Infinity) in June 2014 which propelled her to the limelight. She has released 3 albums as at 2019: ‘Higher Ground’, ‘Expression of His Goodness’ and Emmanuel’, alongside single tracks in 2020 and also ministered in churches both in Nigeria and outside the country.

She got married in 2008 to her husband Adekunle Oniyo who is also her Music Producer and the union is blessed with two children, although they had to wait for 6 years for the fruit of the womb. Her life testifies of the truth that God already made every thing beautiful in His time, even when you can’t see it, God is working and He never stops working if we continue to hold on to Him.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28
